BENEATH THE SURFACE: A STUDY OF SELF

March 6 - April 24, 2021

VENUE: RedLine Satellite: S*Park Pop Up/ 2570 Lawrence Street, Denver CO 80205

Beneath the Surface is Palmeri’s expressive exercise in self-awareness through abstract painting, animation, and sound. The juxtaposition of the still and animated works explores the threshold between the conscious and unconscious mind, or the surface and what sits just beyond. In this way, Palmeri draws a connection between her visual arts practice and meditation and how both encourage a regrounding in the body as a portal to deeper self-reflection. Viewers are invited to practice mindfulness through an immersive presentation to better visualize a space where one’s self ends and the world begins.

*This exhibition was part of Checking In, a state-wide collaboration designed to provide platforms of connection between artists, curators, businesses, cultural institutions and communities who have been in isolation but collectively have space or creative works to offer and/or exchange.

The work Dissolution of Self, pictured above as a large projection with meditation pillows sitting in front, is composed of multiple audiovisual meditations created during the spring of 2020. In each meditation, the color in Palmeri’s paintings slowly and subtly transforms through shifts in light and saturation. Combined with ambient noise recordings captured by the artist from various places around the globe, these audiovisual meditations create an immersive abstraction of our own interiority.

Below are selected chapters from Dissolution of Self.
The work is best experienced with headphones/audio on in a quiet space and in full-screen mode.
