About

Rooted in painterly abstraction, visual artist Sarah Palmeri creates work that explores gesture, symbolism, and the purpose of our emotions. Through a range of media, ranging from painting to digital collage to repetitive, site specific installations, her work gives tactile form to emotion, while also challenging our instinctual need to classify and categorize our experience.

Gesture appears both aesthetically and conceptually in her work. The aesthetic gesture expresses itself through painterly mark making, while the conceptual gesture manifests in process. Found objects and dream psychology coexist alongside traditional tools to further investigate our inner impulses and their influences. Fashion magazines, sunflower seeds, wire neon lights, and old family photographs are used as symbolic representations of the physical elements or objects that arouse emotional energy. Gestural painting, drawing, and collage remain an important part of her practice to consistently revisit emotive spontaneity in color and form, without language or representation. Through this broadened definition of gesture, Palmeri’s work contains visual references to the action and color field painters, together in a contemporary context with both traditional and unusual materials.

Sarah graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in 2011, where she studied mass communication and studio art. She has worked with Think 360 Arts for Learning since early 2016, an arts education nonprofit that integrates the arts in schools and community centers around Colorado. Palmeri launched #TheMagazineProject in 2018 and her work has been exhibited in Ann Arbor, Baton Rouge, Denver, Key West, Los Angeles, Taos, Santa Fe, and San Francisco, and she has been a member of Strangers Art Collective of Santa Fe, NM since 2015. Sarah is currently is living and working in Denver, Colorado.
