Discrimination based on feminine appearances and behaviors has stifled the growth of individuals across the gender spectrum, across our society, and the world at large. It has permeated into our homes, schools, workplaces, governments, and marketplace. Too many people have quietly suffered from the deeply embedded misperception that says to be feminine is to be weak.

My work explores self-identity and gender roles through pareidolia, or “the tendency to perceive a specific image in an ambiguous visual pattern.” Common examples include spotting shapes in the clouds or seeing the man in the moon. By abstracting the human form through painting and collage, I explore the parallels of this visual phenomenon and the social constructs of femininity and gender stereotypes.

I use collage to confront images that perpetuate idealizations of the feminine form. Layers of paint become an abstract mask, a protective armor, and a transformed persona of the figure. The aggressive gesture deceptively appears to vandalize the feminine image. Instead, similar to a graffiti artist, my work is not created to destroy what’s underneath, but to assertively reclaim it and reclaim our right as citizens to be seen, heard, and felt. Together, these processes visually protest against societal expectations of both genders and aim to redefine what it means to feminine.
